In glyptics (the art of engraving fine stones), the cameo is the result of the technique of engraving in relief, as opposed to intaglios which are engraved in hollow.
This art of engraving on stones, shells or other supports that lend themselves to it, is very old. Antique cameo jewelry and cameo medallions have often been found in various archaeological sites, such as Pompeii and Herculaneum. Cameos were most often engraved on agates with several superimposed colors; the artist took advantage of the natural polychromy of the stone to give his subject, by means of the multicolored layers, the appearance of a cameo.
