The slavery necklace knows its apogee in the XIXth century. This antique jewel was offered in the baskets of the young brides by the family of the groom. These antique necklaces consisted of three to five plates which could be rectangular or oval with changing patterns depending on the region of France. The number of plates and chains could be different according to the fortune of the husband.
Some focus on the symbolism of the gold chains, one for the past, another for the present, and the last for the future. Sometimes, on the most prestigious models, a fourth gold chain completes the necklace, symbolizing the eternity of the union of the two spouses or the first child.
Its use is present in many French regions (Auvergne, Normandy, Poitou...) with each one its specificities of realization.
For the manufacture, most of the Goldsmiths jewelers gave the choice to their customers, before assembling them the patterns and the chains.
The associated patterns were most of the time stamped, engraved or enamelled. The most richly endowed were set with fine stones or verroterie for the most modest.
We let you discover this gold and micromosaic slave necklace restored and refurbished by our workshop.
It was created in Paris on special request by an Italian customer who offered to the future French wife, the micromosaics coming from his Italian family of an incredible precision.
Made on the theme of birds, each Roman micro-mosaic on glass paste is engraved in hollows in which tiny pieces of colored and cut glass have been placed. The decorations thus made present birds drinking from an antique cup for the largest and 2 birds for the smallest.
The successful marriage of French craftsmanship and the precision of Italian work.
